![]() David LynchUpdated - 3/13/01 - Mulholland script added! Two unproduced scripts, Ronnie Rocket and One Saliva Bubble added! As soon as David Lynch came on the scene, people knew he would become a force to be reckoned with. With short films like The Alphabet, The Grandmother and The Amputee, Lynch brought a strange, frightening look to the world of film. But it wasn't until Eraserhead that Lynch smashed whatever doors were closed to him. Eraserhead is one of the most beautiful films ever made. A film that stands alone in imagery, in story, in prose... a direction that Hollywood directors were afraid to travel. Mel Brooks, after seeing Eraserhead, got Lynch to do The Elephant Man, utilizing Lynch's feel for black and white photography and his feel for the production of the Victorian country. Lynch decided to tackle quite possibly the worlds greatest science fiction epic, Dune. A lot of controversy surrounds this particular film, with the original cut of the film at a staggering 12 hours long. A shorter version for the weak minded theater goers of the 1980's was made. What followed, a three and a half hour television cut, forced Lynch to take his name from the credits. The television series was edited without his consent and not what Lynch intended for the film. Probably Lynch's most significant work followed. An original script, a violent tale of what hides behind normal, every day life, Blue Velvet became a classic, one of the top 10 films of the 1980's. In 1990, the world was again taken by the Lynch storm. Twin Peaks came out on television and Lynch won over the hearts, minds and dreams of an enormous viewing audience. With 29 episodes and a feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Twin Peaks became the most popular television show, world wide. Wild at Heart also came in 1990 and won Lynch the Palme D'Or in 1990. It's my all time favorite film of Lynch's, taken from the Barry Gifford book of the same title. Two other television series came out, in 92 and 93. On the Air and Hotel Room, both for cable television. Lynch took some time away from film, coming back (again with Gifford) to make the beautiful, erotic thriller Lost Highway, another one of my favorites. The Straight Story was a complete departure for Lynch, but showed the love of the American landscape, the American ideology, a theme that is shown throughout his films. An upcoming movie, Mulholland Drive is slated for release this year. I can't wait. I also have two unproduced scripts of Lynch's. Ronnie Rocket and One Saliva Bubble.
